Luke’s Use of Koinonia

Luke’s Use of Koinonia Scott Jackson In Acts 2:42, Luke uses the word koinonia as one of his key terms for describing the vitality of life in the early church. Considering that Luke wrote almost one-third of the New Testament, it is significant that the word koinonia appears only here in his writings. It seems that Luke carefully and strategically chose this word to assist his readers in understanding what had taken place in the Jerusalem church. So, what exactly happened and what did Luke mean by the term? The immediate context of the early chapters of Acts helps one to answer these questions (Acts 2:42-47). The context reveals that the early believers were participating together in worship activities such as listening to the apostles’ teaching, partaking of the Lord’s Supper, praying regularly, and experiencing praiseful worship. Additionally, they were sharing their possessions with each other, which included selling land and giving the money to the apostles to distribute...
Jesus’ Seven Last Words from the Cross 1. “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing” (Luke 23:34). This prayer that the Father would forgive his enemies and executioners was actually answered by his own death, which made forgiveness possible. 2. “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise” (Luke 23:43)  this promise offers paradise—a place of life, rest, peace, and fellowship with God—to the repentant criminal being crucified beside Jesus. 3. “Woman, here is your son”. .. “Here is your mother” (John 19:26-27).  Since Joseph had presumably already died by this time, Jesus as the oldest son is now responsible to care for his mother. He does so by entrusting her to “the disciple whom he loved.” 4. “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matt. 27:46; Mark 15:34; cf. Psalm 22:1) Jesus quotes Psalm 22:1, a prayer of King David who was suffering unjustly. As the ultimate righteous sufferer, Jesus also confes...

Discipleship in the New Testament

Discipleship in the New Testament Joseph R. Dodson In the Great Commission, Jesus commands his disciples to make disciples. But what is discipleship? Christians weren’t the only ones to make disciples in the ancient world.  For instance, John the Baptist had disciples (e.g., Matt. 9:14; Luke 7:18—19; John 1:35—37; Acts 19:1—3) as did the Pharisees (e.g., Matt. 22:16; Mark 2:18; John 9:28—29). Moreover, in the New Testament world many philosophical schools, such as the Sophists and Stoics, had disciples. Within all of these groups, discipleship primarily involved imitation, following and adhering to the example of a god or master teachers or both. Christian discipleship also called for imitation. According to Jesus, “A disciple is not above his teacher, but, once he has been fully trained, the disciple will be like his teacher” (Luke 6:40); indeed, as the teacher is, so should the disciple be also (Matt. 10:25). Jesus makes it clear that only his disciples will rece...

Business requirements

Business requirements Entrepreneur  > Manager > Leader Start-ups require the spark   of  entrepreneurship;  but  growth requires a different set of skills: a founder must transition from being sole  decision  maker to  being a disciplined manager and a successful  leader. Those who are unable  to  make  this  transition   often need to step aside and let the professionals take over. But this is often easier said than done.  Ref The Business book( Big ideas simply explained) by DK publishing
